What are proteins?
Proteins are large molecules made by linking amino acids into long chains, then folding those chains into precise shapes that can do real work.

Muscle, enzymes, and antibodies are all proteins. When you train or heal, your body rebuilds these structures from amino acids you eat.

The body’s working machinery
If DNA is the blueprint, proteins are the builders, tools, and finished rooms. Nearly every process you care about — digesting food, contracting muscle, fighting infection, carrying oxygen — depends on proteins doing their jobs on time.
Each protein’s function comes from its shape. That shape comes from the sequence of amino acids along the chain. Change the sequence, and you may change how well the protein works — or whether it works at all.
How proteins are built
Cells read genetic instructions and assemble amino acids one by one. Short stretches are called peptides; longer functional folds are proteins. Many proteins need helpers (vitamins, minerals, sugar tags) before they are fully ready.
Structural proteins
Collagen, keratin, and actin give strength and form to skin, hair, bone matrix, and muscle fibers.
Functional proteins
Enzymes speed reactions. Hormones signal. Antibodies defend. Hemoglobin carries oxygen. Transporters move nutrients across membranes.
What happens when protein is low — or excessive
- Too little: slower wound healing, muscle loss, weaker immunity, hair and nail changes, and — in severe cases — edema and growth problems.
- Enough, well timed: supports lean mass, satiety, recovery, and steady energy — especially when paired with good sleep and movement.
- Very high intakes: usually fine for healthy kidneys, but can crowd out plants, fiber, and micronutrients; people with kidney disease need clinical guidance.
